How to Set Up Your Bambu Lab Printer: Step-by-Step
Just got a new Bambu Lab printer? Good news: setup is one of the easiest in 3D printing. This step-by-step guide takes you from unboxing to your first successful print in under an hour. Need a machine first? Browse Bambu Lab 3D printers at NEX3D.
1. Unbox and remove all shipping protection
Carefully remove the printer and accessories. The most-missed step: take out all the foam, tape and shipping screws (the manual shows their locations). Leaving a transport screw in is the #1 cause of first-day errors.
2. Power on and run guided setup
Turn the printer on and follow the on-screen wizard. It will connect to Wi-Fi, check for firmware updates, and walk you through the basics. Let any firmware update finish completely before continuing.
3. Run auto-calibration
Bambu Lab printers self-level and calibrate automatically — no manual bed leveling required. Run the calibration routine when prompted; it takes a few minutes and ensures a clean first layer.
4. Load your filament
Start with PLA for your first print. Feed the filament into the extruder (or AMS, if you have a Combo) and use the "load filament" function on the screen. Not sure which material to use? See our filament guide.
5. Install Bambu Studio and slice a model
Download the free Bambu Studio software (or the Handy app). Grab a beginner model from MakerWorld, open it in Bambu Studio, select your printer and filament, and click "Slice." The default profile works great to start.
6. Send your first print
Send the sliced file to the printer over Wi-Fi or via the included storage card. Watch the first layer go down — a good first layer is the best predictor of a successful print.
First-print tips & quick troubleshooting
- Print not sticking? Clean the build plate with dish soap and water (not just isopropyl) to remove oils, and make sure you removed the plate's protective film.
- Stringing or messy prints? Make sure your filament is dry and you selected the correct material profile.
- Error on startup? Re-check that every shipping screw and foam piece is removed.
- Keep spare nozzles, build plates and parts on hand as you scale up.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to set up a Bambu Lab printer? Most people go from unboxing to first print in about 30–60 minutes, including firmware updates and calibration.
Do I need to manually level the bed on a Bambu Lab printer? No. Bambu Lab printers auto-level and auto-calibrate — there's no manual bed leveling.
Why won't my first print stick to the bed? Usually because the build plate has oils or a protective film on it. Wash the plate with dish soap and water and ensure any film is removed.
What software does a Bambu Lab printer use? The free Bambu Studio (desktop) for slicing, and the Bambu Handy app for mobile control.
